Audiobooks

I just finished listening to my first 'full-length' audiobook. I am still 50/50 on whether or not I will ever do it again. It could have just been that the book was terrible. I hesitate to say this since it was the most recent Clive Cussler "Dirk Pitt" book (you know, from Sahara.) In this particular book he basically gets old, quits and gets married.
It also had a Scooby-Doo ending which I HATE so much that I can't really express it here.
Beyond that - I cry alot while reading books (and watching movies, and breathing, etc). It was difficult to not cry at the "I'm getting old, lets get married" part because it was so many books in the making. But I couldn't cry because I was at work.
Also, some guy reading a female bit of dialogue sincerely cracks me up. It just sounds terrible. I would also never attempt another audiobook on a portable CD player. I spent more money in batteries than I did on the book itself.

With regard to the audiobooks, the way I determine which books to listen to and which books to read: I weigh my curiosity about the book against my realistic expectation of ever having time to fit it in to be read. So pretty much the books that "yes, I want to know what its about" but "no, I will never make time to read it because I have a stack of other books ahead of it to be read."

Other factors to consider are:
a)The amount of concentration required. My first audiobook, I made the mistake of choosing "The Da Vinci Code". I ended up needing to listen to the book and then going back and using the actual book as a reference guide.
b)Previously read books in a series or by the same author. Every person has a voice in their head that goes along while they read. It doesn't matter how good the audiobook reader is, that reader will never compare to the "reader's voice" in your head.
c)Subject matter. Choose a subject matter that is light but interesting and enjoyable. You want something that will hold you train of thought but not overwhelm so much that you can't do your work.

With regard to an audioplayer, audible.com has a special where you can get purchase a new iPod for $100 off if you sign up for audible for a year (or you can get a shuffle for free). Its worth looking into.

If it wasn't so close to Christmas I would definitely look into the audible/iPod thing. Is it a Christmas special or an ongoing thing that will be available still after Christmas?

No, its an ongoing thing. You should just check out their website for it. Looks pretty cool. I'm thinking about doing it for Shawn.
